Ā Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions
Ingredients:
For the Steak Marinade:
1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tbsp rice vinegar (or white vinegar)
1 tsp sesame oil
½ tsp black pepper
For the Stir-Fry:
2 tbsp vegetable or sesame oil
1 medium onion, sliced
1 green bell pepper, sliced
1 red bell pepper, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp ginger, minced (optional but authentic)
For the Sauce:
¼ cup soy sauce
2 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional for sweetness)
1 tbsp cornstarch + ¼ cup water (for thickening)
1 tbsp brown sugar or honey (optional)
½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional for spice)
Instructions:
Marinate the beef:
In a bowl, mix sliced beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, vinegar, sesame oil, and pepper. Let it sit for 15ā20 minutes to tenderize.
Prepare the sauce:
In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, and water mixed with cornstarch. Set aside.
Sear the beef:
Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add beef in batches and cook until browned (about 2 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.
Cook vegetables:
In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed. Stir-fry onions, bell peppers, garlic, and ginger for 2ā3 minutes ā they should stay slightly crisp.
Combine and simmer:
Return beef to the pan, pour in the sauce, and toss everything together. Cook for another 2ā3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and veggies.
Serve:
Serve hot over steamed white rice or noodles. Sprinkle with sesame seeds or chopped green onions for garnish. šš„¢
